  • Abstract:

    The basis of the volume is a unique source on the history of the era published in full for the first time—correspondence (1865–1877) between P.A. Vyazemsky (1792–1878) and historian, bibliographer, founder and publisher of the journal “Russian Archive” P.I. Bartenev (1829–1912). The presented corpus of letters touches primarily on issues related to the publication of documents from the Ostafyevo archive, princes Vyazemskys’ family collection, in Bartenev’s journal; the correspondents’ not fully identical approaches to the publication of historical materials (be it the era of Peter the Great or the biography of A.S. Pushkin) are revealed. Thus, the correspondence between Vyazemsky and Bartenev, in addition to its obvious significance for the study of their biographies and socio-literary positions, is also a valuable source on the development of Russian archivism as a scientific discipline, with its own special journal.

    In Appendices the following materials are published: Bartenev’s correspondence with P.A. Vyazemsky’s son and his wife—P.P. and M.A. Vyazemsky; preserved in draft form and previously unpublished article by M.N. Longinov for the anniversary meeting of the Society of Russian Literature Lovers, dedicated to honoring F.N. Glinka and P.A. Vyazemsky; Vyazemsky’s notes in the margins of the collection of his poems “On the Road and at Home” (1862); letters from various persons and diary entries concerning the death and burial of P.A. Vyazemsky, as well as obituaries.

    All materials reflecting various aspects of Vyazemsky’s activities as a poet, historian, publicist, and literary critic are prepared and commented in detail specially for this volume.
