  • Abstract:

    The book contains for the first time the full correspondence between Valery Bryusov (1873–1924), one of the founders and ideologists of Russian symbolism, and Pyotr Pertsov (1868–1947), a prominent publisher and writer. Тhe correspondence consists of 364 letters and is divided into three periods. Тhe first part (1894–1896) is devoted to a discussion of the problems of modern literature. Bryusov formulates his concept of symbolism. Тhis makes the correspondence a valuable source on the history of Russian poetry and Russian symbolism. Тhe second part of the correspondence begins in October 1898 and is devoted to the joint literary projects of Bryusov and Pertsov. Тogether they participated in the publication of the monthly magazine “New Way” (1903–1904). Pertsov was a publishing editor and one of the shareholders, and Bryusov acted as the literary secretary of the magazine. Тhe third part of the correspondence (1904–1906) is devoted to the reaction of Bryusov and Pertsov to the events of the Russian revolution and the Russo-Japanese war.

    Scientific edition of the correspondence prepared by A.V. Lavrov, academician of RAS. Numerous archival materials are published for the first time in the article and notes.
