  • Abstract:

Volume 111 of “Literary Heritage” brings together for the first time — and verifies against surviving manuscript materials — the philological works of Andrei Bely dating from the periods of the Revolution and the Civil War; specifically, it comprises materials from his articles and lectures pertaining to his “Theory of the Word”. Of undoubted value is the reconstruction of the lost book “On Rhythmic Gesture”; furthermore, the various stages of the creative process behind the book “Glossolalia” have been systematically reconstructed. The volume reproduces unique visual materials — diagrams and watercolor sketches by the writer —that originally accompanied the drafts of his articles and lecture courses. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the state of Bely’s “Theory of the Word” during the interval between “Symbolism” (1910) and his major works of the late 1920s and early 1930s (“Rhythm as Dialectic” and “The Craft of Gogol”).

The edition is supplemented by extensive scholarly commentary, introductory and concluding essays, and an index of names.

This book is intended for philologists, historians, cultural theorists, and philosophers, as well as for researchers, graduate students, undergraduates, and the general reading public.

  • Keywords: Andrei Bely, theory of the word, “Glossolalia”, “Aaron’s Rod”, “On Rhythmic Gesture”, poetics, textual criticism.
